Good but not great-worth the money.
It works as advertised but the lights can be hard to see. If you turn the device so the lights face somewhat toward the ground, (creating a shadow) you can see the lights well. Probably works great at night or early morning.

Simple to use, well made
I found the fence tester simple to use and easy to read. Press the ground probe into the dirt then hook the top to the fence and watch for the indicator lamps to light. Fencers generate pulsed voltage so you need to be able to watch the flash of the indicator lamps. In bright sun you will need to shade the lamps with your hand in order to see them but I had no problem doing this. Overcast or at night it is very easy to see the lamps flash. I did check to see if the metal screws holding the tester together are isolated from the electronics and they are so there is no danger of a shock when holding the device. The tester is also a good indication of how well your fencer is grounded. When connecting the ground probe to the fencer ground stake mine read 6000 volts. When pushing the ground probe into dry soil it only read 4000 volts. With the ground probe pushed into damp soil it read 6000 volts. The internal components are soldered to a good quality fiberglass printed circuit board and the soldering quality was good. I did notice that the resistor leads were left a little long and two were touching which should not have. I trimmed all the leads. The board is securely mounted in the case and the ground probe lead has good strain relief. The high voltage hook is securely soldered to the PC board. Overall I think this is a very good device which should last if cared for.

Good Electric Fence Tester
It works! For the folks who whine about the neon bulb lights not being visible in bright sunlight, shade the lights with your hand. It's not hard at all.Stab the grounding spear into the ground, hook the tester onto the fence in question, and it quickly shows you whether there are electric pulses running through your fence.I like that this device does not need a battery to work. Batteries die, leak, and kill electronic devices. This unit isn't perfect (hence my 4 star review), but works VERY WELL for its price. It helped me diagnose a grounded-out fence.

Does Not Work At All
Doesn’t work. The fence will shock the crap out of you but the tester shows nothing

Better than the 'grab test'
No idea of how accurate the indicated charge readings are but who cares? This is the best way to verify the fence is hot without having to endure the pain yourself or wait for an animal to test it.

It's basic, but all you usually need...
Very easy and straighforward to use. After you get shocked once or twice, you learn to keep your hands off of the metal parts when testing (yes, it happened to me). That's not a problem, as you have to have some metal in there to get a reading. I was able to use the tester, even in fairly bright sunlight. There is no HOLD feature, which is fine for me, as I just need to see that the fence is working (and giving a good jolt of juice). I think if you're having grounding, or other short circuit issues, this tester will get you a long way to resolving them.

This unit works very well
This is an inexpensive and effective way to ensure your pig fence is working. I have solar powered units which put out 8,000 volts. This tester confirmed that and it also showed the pulse rate for the fencing wire. Easiest things to use. Hang it on the wire and stick the probe in the ground, and read the neon light.

Not worth the time or money
Junk worked one time and that’s it
