Spectral/hp Element Methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics (Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computation)

Very good reference for numerical methods applied to CFD problems.

The first version of this book (published 1999, refer to the review written in JFM for more details) was excellent; this second edition is even better than the first one! Almost all the pitfalls are fixed in this edition. In the first edition, chapter 2 was a little concise, esp as it was the introduction to SEM and you might have no clear idea about this method. However, in the 2nd ed. this chapter is developed thoroughly, having enough info even for the beginners. In this edition some marks has been introduced, helping the reader to know which parts are a mathematical formulation and which parts are applications of those formulations.Although almost being perfect in other chapters, chapter "incompressible flow simulation" could still be better, but never mind, you can have complementary info by reading papers about the simulation details. The subchapter DNS (in this chapter) still needs improvement as it doesn't include any information about DNS, but just some results and grid details.All in all, I think it is the best book to start learning SEM. The language is neat and tidy, with no more or less on the info you should know; it has a rigorous presentation of mathematical concepts as well as a good collaboration on the applicational matters. I suggest this book to everyone who wants to learn SEM, esp as the 2nd edition is completely self-containing.
