Celebrating Nurses: A Visual History

Who started nursing and why!
This was a nice review of how the nursing profession got its start. It was interesting to read about the various ladies throughout history who started nursing in their part of the world. Being a nurse myself, I had hoped to see more pictures of the various uniforms and caps that were worn. I'm sorry to see the white uniforms and caps gone as that distinguished us from the rest of the hospital personnel.

Great Overview of Nursing History
This is not a book to dismiss as a book of "pretty pictures" of nurses through the ages. Instead, it provides a history of the development of the profession of nursing, using illustrations to support each phase. It follows the historical threads - religious, military and the class threads - working class nurses providing basic care and upper class nurses providing more sophisticated care and leadership - these threads continue to influence the profession even today. The author takes care to remind the reader that within the profession of nursing, "not only the famous are extraordinary." It is an extremely readable book. The illustrations are beautiful and appropriate to its historical framework.

Great Find!
I was looking for a nursing book to celebrate a friend who has been a nurse. This one had the history plus the present and into the future for expectations in nursing. I bought it and donated it to our city library in memory of my friend. Her family ispleased with the choice.

great gift for a nurse
I bought this as a gift for Nurses Day for my outpatient nurse. I had a chance to flip through before giving it to her. It is a beautiful book. She absolutely loves it. She keeps it at her desk and flips through it with the other nurses between pages.

LOVE IT
I just wrote a review of Sunnybrook Hospital, thinking it was this book. Please switch these two reviews. Thie History of Sunnybrook, is a very interesting book, and very well writen. Takes you from the early days right up to present day. My only complaint would be that some of the pictures should have better descriptions, and dates. For example, there is a pictures of Nursing Students, it should have dated the pictire, and indicated wha Nursing School they were from. I had no idea what Sunnybrook went thru' to get from a non-teaching Hospital, to one of UofT's biggest teaching Hospitals, next to TGH.
