Excellent mid-range pen for everyday use. Shorter than average, so make sure you're okay with that. The pen appears to have hard, uncomfortable edges, but they are actually quite soft and easy to grip. Also, this pen's click mechanism doesn't really click, it's nearly silent. If you're looking for a strong tactile or audible click, this isn't the pen for you. If you want something nice, lightweight, small but not too small, and that is a pleasure to write with, I recommend an 849!

This pen is incredible! I can write tiniest marks because the ink runs smoothly and the tip does not wiggle at all as I write. It also doesn't gum up around the ball. The pretty color and the solid structure is a huge plus!

I love how this writes and esthetically it's lovely. The retractor doesn't 'click' like other pens which I find pleasing. It's a bit lighter than I expected - still not sure how I feel about that. I do wish it were a couple mm longer and that the pen tip stuck out a tiny bit more.

The Caran d’Ache 849 is a superb pen. At a mild price, you receive a remarkably well-designed Swiss pen. The build and writing quality of this pen are like that of a $40-$60 pen.Function: The 849 is exceptionally well engineered. The aluminum body leads the pen to balance well, and maintain a light and comfortable weight. The Goliath ink cartridge of this pen is incredible. I’ve used the pen on a daily basis for a year as an engineering student, and I’m still using the original ink cartridge. Caran d’Ache rates the Goliath cartridge for up-to 8000 meters of ink, or 600 pages of standard A4 paper. The ink flows well, achieving a good balance of fluid between a traditional ballpoint pen and a rollerball. The 849 has a silent click that rarely malfunctions, if you depress the push button completely. The stainless steel push-button houses the internal action, a brass-plastic interface. While a plastic action isn’t ideal, I’ve had no problems in just over a year and haven’t heard of any issues from other users.Looks: The 849 has a very appealing modern and minimalistic design. The electrostatic powder coating is consistent and even as it covers the whole pen body. The powder coating process lends well to durability with minimal paint chipping on the rugged aluminum body. The stainless steel clip and push button are well polished and blend into the pen body very well. This pen is professional and elegant in all environments; it frequently receives compliments from my engineering colleagues.Feel: In the hand, this pen feels right. The hexagonal tapered barrel provides adequate grip in most all scenarios. The shape is greatly complimented by the feel of quality powder coating. The ‘click’ is satisfying and feels very well calculated. One of the best parts of this pen is the size and dimensions. The length is perfect, not too short, and not too excessive, and leads to a great feel when writing.After handling this pen on a daily basis for a year, it is certainly my favorite pen to date. I’ve used many pens and for the money, you cannot find a better writing instrument. So, if you’re looking for an excellent pen at a very affordable price, this pen is for you.

I had one of these ballpoint pens ages ago and have misplaced it. This is a real keeper! The cartridge writes very smoothly and does not blob up on the paper. I wrote about 150 Christmas Cards with this pen and did not suffer fatigue or cramped fingers. There is a comfortable spot to place each of your fingers and when you hold the pen you almost automatically sense this. I would recommend this pen to anyone who has to do a lot of writing or note-taking...

These pens feel solid in your hand, write very smoothly, and look stylish at the same time. I use mine every day, and if someone asks to borrow my pen, I reach into my bag and find a different one to give them.

Pen was great and the design was as expected. The silent retractable click and noticeable shape of the pen is the best part of this pen
