Great Cookbook for Soup Lovers

This cookbook is a must for soup lovers. The variety and flavor of these soups are an inspiration. It is also a great starter cookbook for new chefs as nothing is too complicated or fussy.

For the soup lover!

I love soup all winter, and this book doesn’t disappoint. Based on French pescatarian, it has each month based on what’s in season. I cook on our wood stove all winter and can’t wait to try these recipes!

Soup by Season

A book of vegetable-based soups (but neither vegan nor vegetarian.) From a Benedictine monk at a monastery in LaGrange, New York, these soups are simple but very satisfying meal starters or entire dinners.I made the Portuguese Kale soup which allows you to choose whether to put in sausage or not. The soup is based on tomato, white beans and kale. I did add sausage and some green part of leek and it was really good. There are many other soups that looks excellent; a bouillabaisse, barley soup and borscht to name a few.The soups are organized by season so you can choose to make pumpkin (poitiron) soup in Fall and fresh pea soup or sorrel soup in Spring.

Healthy, wholesome, and fun to make!

I received this book over a week into September and my goal is to try one new soup recipe per week. So far I have made 3 soups from the month of September and we have just a few days til October starts and I can refresh my options to choose from! Having a lot of fun with these fresh ingredients... before I purchased this cookbook almost all soups I had ever made were canned storebought soups. Haven’t come across any really meaty soups so if you want to make hearty stew type soups this may not be the cookbook for you, but any recipe you make can easily be adapted and made with the meat of your choice. I counted out the recipes and if I continue making one soup a week, it will take me over 3 years to have tried each one, so here goes!

Best Soup Cookbook Ever

Best soup cookbook I've ever come across. Each one is delicious and I really enjoy making these soups. I'm so glad he wrote this book since we love soups in this family and the canned soups leave much to be desired (I had to throw out a whole can of Vegetable Beef just the other day it was so bad; the soup tasted as of spoiling vegetables in a thin starchy base with four chunks of beef the size of a pencil eraser; big name brand company, too.) There is nothing so good as freshly made soup and there are plenty of different recipes to choose from. I highly recommend putting this book into your cooking arsenal and I hope he will consider writing a bread making book to go with the soups. I'd love to have some good recipes for herb, garlic, white, peasant and oatmeal breads and for some Venetian rolls, too. Just think, homemade soup with fresh homemade bread and fresh herb butter... now there's a reason for showing up to eat!

Correcting Review Mistakes

This is a great cookbook. I'm here to correct a couple of the top reviews.1. This book includes seasonal ingredients to New York, not France. If you are in Canadian provinces or American states near New York this will be seasonal for you, too.2. This cookbook does NOT rely on bouillon, as that "chef" who didn't even try any of the recipes stated. There is an appendix with recipes for all the stocks, sauces, and croutons mentioned in this book. You are encouraged to make your own meat, chicken or vegetable stock throughout the book, from the very beginning.I love this book. It offers many recipes from around the world. They are basic enough to tweak and make your own, even for a beginner. Don't be fooled by erroneous reviews, this is a good one.
