Great Academic Vocabulary Development Workbook.
This is a great series. I use it with advanced ESL students, and now I'm using it with my 13-year-old to start PSAT prep. There are enough exercises that if you complete them all, you will know the vocabulary pretty well.

A copy you can write in.
I like that my kid's school uses these. I think that learning the words in here help students in their journey to master the English language. However, my kid's school only provides copies that they must return at the end of the year, and they aren't allowed to write in them. I find it worth the money to purchase a copy that he can write in and engage with more directly. Pro tip! ...Be sure to double check that you are purchasing the exact same edition!

first time examining this series
I was required to use Great Source's Vocabulary for Achievement (vocab and SAT prep) with my previous district for many years. So I'm using that as a point of comparison here. Now that I'm free to explore different vocabulary options, I've been browsing this series and other options. I was very satisfied with the most recent edition of Vocabulary for Achievement, but that series and their website and books seem to be going through a whole lot of changes due to Common Core and aren't as easily available right now.I just received the 2012 9th grade Level D/Common Core Enriched Edition of Vocabulary Workshop and this review is based on only my own book browse. I have not used any previous editions of this book. Nor have I used it with students. I'm not yet sure that I will at the moment. But I wish someone had emphasized a few things about the size and described the layout of this book before I bought it as I wasn't too careful in looking at all the facts as it only had one review when I ordered it. So I'd like to share that and perhaps update later. My first disappointment is that the size of this workbook is not the typical workbook size. It's much smaller and more like the size of a large novel. I just measured about 9x6, though the product dimensions on this Amazon page say it's even smaller. That is an important issue for me because there isn't much "white space" on the inside. Words look somewhat crammed together and are small in font and I believe this really affects student perception of the material. Perhaps not for the more advanced, truly college bound student. Although I teach CP English (College Prep), I work with a very low-skilled population in general and every little thing counts in presentation of material to affect motivation and receptiveness. Hate the size. I suspect they will too.The workbook is made up of 15 units. They are not themed (VforA is themed and has 30 lessons which break down nicely for every week of the year). There are 20 words per unit (VforA has 10). Each unit consists of the following sections IN THIS ORDER: a Reading Passage, Definitions, Choosing the right Word, Synonyms and Antonyms, Completing the Sentence, Writing (two prompts), and Vocabulary in Context. It is very similar to VforA in nature. But I feel it is better applied to the more advanced classes with this many words and because of the presentation. One thing I prefer with the Definitions section of VforA is they have different forms of the word and model sentences for each. There is also a "write the derivative" exercise that allows them to practice with different forms of the word. Nor is there information about word roots or origin in the definition. VforA is more like a dictionary excerpt and I prefer that so they familiarize themselves with dictionary language and layout. There is also a phonetic key on the inside cover of VforA. Not here. I would really miss those aspects. In this workbook there are 5 test-like review units (every 3 lessons). A Word Study section also follows each review unit. There is also one final Mastery Test.I do not regret this purchase, but I'm having a hard time letting go of what I'm used to. It will make an excellent addition to my teacher material library and I'll have to reconsider how I might use this with the students I currently have… if at all.

Don't need no answer key because any adult with a mildly decent vocab should know all the answers
I'm using this book as a tutor for an eighth grader. I have seen people complain about the lack of answer key. I don't need an answer key because I studied a lot harder words for the SAT and went to college. I can answer each question in about 5 seconds. These are moderately challenging words for an eighth grader. If you are homeschooling your child and need an answer key to these easy vocab lessons, you probably shouldn't be homeschooling your child.

Excellent vocabulary builder book
The content of the lessons is engaging and seeing the words within the appropriate context helps retention. I study English as a foreign language and this has proven extremely useful in building my vocabulary. Very recommended.
