Q: What is the dimension across the mouth of the jar?

Outside rim to rim is 3 1/4 inches. Inside is 2 7/8 inches.

Q: can this be used to boil water on stove top (without the plastic)?

I would not trust it on the stove. I have added hot water to it without any issues.

Q: Can the filter be removed for cleaning?

No, the filter is incorporated in the handle and doesn't come out. It can easily be accessed from the top by flipping up the cover and from the bottom by unscrewing the heavy plastic top from the glass container. You can use a small brush to clean if you wish, but I rarely do so, as it stays clean. Typically, I wash the glass container with soap and water by hand, put the top on and shake it, then pour the soapy water out through the filter before rinsing with tap water from both sides. Occasionally, I will also just run the glass container through the dishwasher. I don’t put the plastic top through the dishwasher, and I don’t know if you could. I make refrigerator tea with it, so there is no bacteria build-up (the cloudiness and lousy taste as tea ages), which is typical with sun tea. I drop in two regular bags, add tap water, place in the refrigerator door, and it is done in 4 hours. I leave the bags in the tea until empty before dumping them out and starting again. [According to the Centers for Disease Control, using the sun to brew tea can facilitate the growth of bacteria. The sun can heat tea to about 130 ° F, which is not nearly hot enough to kill the bacteria in the water or tea itself.]
