Q: Any suggestions for getting an alternative pouch / holder for the communicator? My dog chewed up my pouch.

Have a look at eBay or trekpropzone. You'll see people selling very nice handmade leather holders for this communicator. Be prepared to spend $60-$70. Well worth it.

Q: Why would a communicator that is most likely used by all members of the federation, have a case that is specific to the uss enterprise?

Actually the starfleet emblem seen on TOS is not unique to the Enterprise...all starfleet personal assigned to a star ship had the same ensigna on there shirt...but in the TOS depending on what your function was you had your own emblem, Command had one, starbase/space station personal had there own as well...and everte we saw someone in TOS with a different emblem on they were from a different command function in starfleet.

Why spend $150 on such an awesome functional prop and not use Velcro like they did in the original series. The loop or soft fuzzy part goes on your pants and the hook or scratchy part goes on the back of the communicator, get marine grade a Velcro you will only need a small 1x1 inch square on the back of the device sew a large patch on the hip of the trousers.
