The angst, the agony!
Somebody Else’s Sky is book in the Something in the Way series. This is a super angsty series following Lake and Manning over 4 books. They met in the first book when she was 16 and he was 23, and while Lake and Manning met first, he started dating her older sister instead. In this second book we follow more of their messy, agony filled journey and again, they aren’t together by the end of this book. I’m currently rereading this series and the whole journey of the series is what I’m here for. So like, I enjoy the ride and emotions of it all! 😅This book picks up 1 year after the events of the first book. So it’s 1994 and Manning has been in prison for 1 year. Tiffany, Lake’s sister, has been visiting Manning in prison twice a month since he plead guilty to a crime he didn’t commit. He won’t allow Lake to visit him and doesn’t even read the letters she’s been writing him. When Manning finally is released from prison after 17 months in, Lake is now 17 and about to graduate highschool and turn 18. He doesn’t have anywhere to go after his release and ends up doing what’s easy, moving in with Tiffany in her new apartment. Manning ends up getting into carpentry and is just kind of going with the flow, being in a relationship with Tiffany who tells him she loves her, but still thinking of Lake and trying to stay away from her while also super pulled to being in her life.We get some angst between Lake and Manning when he picks her up on her prom night, she sees his new tattoo of the Summer Triangle constellation (that he told her about in book 1), and they end up sharing an almost-moment in the kitchen late at night before Tiffany wakes up. Manning learns some horrible things about his father that he did in the past and that weighs heavily on his mind in this book and is one of the reasons he tries to put distance between himself and Lake. Around the time Lake turns 18, Tiffany starts talking about marriage. Manning feels like he brings good to Tiffany’s life, while he’d only bring bad to Lake’s. While celebrating Lake’s highschool graduation and acceptance into their father’s college alma mater, Tiffany blurts out that her and Manning are soon-to-be engaged! Lake confronts Manning and lays it all out, she tells him she loves him and asks him to pick her. He brings a sad dose of reality to her dreams instead, tells her that her father is working to wipe his record clean, giving him a job, and asks what she and him would even do right now anyways. She has her whole future ahead and he wants her to have the world and knows he can’t give her that. The prologue and the ending of the book both start and end with a wedding…

5 HEART-WRENCHING Stars! In DESPERATE need of book 3!
"Her innocence and simplicity defied the chaos in my head"WORST-BEST book hangover EVER.That was so cruel. Or was it? Maybe it was. I don't know!!! When I first finished the story, I was mad, really mad like super-ragey-angry-mad, I was basically all of the emoji faces all at once, especially the one with snot fuming out of its nose. Because that was me. I was crying, pacing, yelling and probably looking like a damn fool. Thank god I don't have a nanny cam because that wouldn't be pretty to watch. You know it's a great book when you need a support group full of like-minded individuals just to help you through the next five months. After I let all my emotions sink in, like REALLY sink in, I'm still an emotional wreck-4 days later! Between all the different conspiracy theories and scenarios running through my head, I'm an absolute mess and I couldn't be happier about it because I have faith in the process, and If book one didn't cement Jessica Hawkins in my heart, this sure as hell did. So thank you Jessica, for making me crazy and happy and miserable and ALL THE THINGS. Every book should fuel this kind of fire in its readers. EVERY. BOOK."I didn’t see these other girls and feel stirred the way I did for Lake, but at that moment, I wished it was anyone but her. I wished I’d never f*&king met her. I just didn’t wish it enough to walk away for good."As I let the story settle in a little more I realized that I was probably feeling all of the emotions that this author wanted me to feel. I'm pretty sure this is the effect that every author wants to have on his or her readers. However, not every author can achieve that, and Jessica did, TENFOLD. I really feel like I read a book that captured the essence of young love and the forbidden fantasy of what we can't have. I remember young love well, it's tragic and heart-wrenching and it's littered with vividly beautiful moments that are unforgettable. And that's a perfect way to describe this book. Will I die waiting for book 3? Not technically I hope, but yes, this will be a torturous 5 months because I have been profoundly moved by this series.“You think I don’t know how you feel? You think I don’t carry the burden of our love on my shoulders just to keep it from crashing down onto you?”We start this story right where the first book left off, and we get Manning's point of you for a lot of the book, which is as scary as it is nice because there's no way in hell that I want his mind on Tiffany! And let me tell you, there's a lot of Tiffany. SO. MUCH. TIFFANY. I'm not going in to the what's and why's of how I feel about Tiffany, or what happened because one, I don't want to spoil anything. And two, I don't really want to spend my time talking about that wench."She would be mad, but she couldn’t deny the unshakeable truth about Manning and me—this story was ours."There's not actually much I can talk about without spoiling so I'll just continue with how I feel. I'm mad, I'm so mad, but I'm also extremely hopeful. I swear this book made me bi-polar, like why is this happening!?! All I feel is grief and anxiousness and pain and it hurts. If you want to read a book that will hold your attention and make you breathless and shatter you in complicated young-love glory than READ THIS BOOK.“Even if all that’s true, you’re forgetting one thing. You can love me more than anyone else could. How can you ignore that?”Manning is trying to make the right decision with his life by doing right by both Lake and Tiffany. And I firmly believe that everything he does is out of careful consideration and adoration for Lake, but then we have Tiffany and he obviously has adoration for her as well. I understand Lake, but why Tiffany!? Ugggh just talking about her makes me itchy and uncomfortable. PLUS, the way Tiffany treats Lake is downright wrong. Like dude, that's your little sister, you're supposed to protect her and love her and pick her up when she's down, not kick her when she's down! There are very few books that I can say all of these things about and still give it a 5 star review. Like I've never been so mad reading a book but I still freaking loved it!!! How does that even happen?! Jessica Hawkins is a sorceress I know it. It's as if she left a piece of her soul in different parts of this book for each reader to take and keep with them, like a literary souvenir so we can never forget the magic of this story and discover the profound enormity of love within its pages. Because that's what the underlying message is here, in my opinion. That love is hard and angry and all-consuming and unpredictable. And I can't wait to read book 3 to see where all of that love goes. Hands down, this is my favorite series this year.

UGH!
I told myself I wasn’t going to read these books because I knew they would piss me off but I saw a bunch of people I trust recommend them, so I was like I have it read it!!! But omg I hate these books so far 😂I hate Tiffany with a passion lmao! This book was even more heartbreaking than the first one. I almost wish lake would like Corbin like ugh!! But I know this is the whole point of the series but UGH!!! (Also will corbin and Val be a thing!?) I really loved seeing more of manning’s perspective though , I understood him and the choices he made more. I just wanted to punch him into therapy haha!! The story and characters are so well thought out. Tiffany, manning and lake are so complex! Definitely going to finish the series so did I hate it!? It’s just very frustrating!! lol

My favourite series of all time
Manning comes back into Lake’s life after being away for the last two years. Struggling to come to terms with the fact that she’s now 18, has been waiting for him, and has bloomed into an even more beautiful young woman, he continues dating Tiffany, much to Lake’s horror.Unsure of how to integrate back into society, Lake and Tiffany’s father makes Manning an offer he doesn’t think he can refuse. And ultimately this decision destroys Lake.Oh.my.god. If I thought the last book killed me, I had absolutely no idea what was in store with this one! Poor poor Lake! Honestly, my soul was just crushed for her! All she wants is to be with Manning, and yet everyone and everything seems to keep working against her until she just can’t take it anymore. And who can blame her???Tiffany is even worse than in book 1 and has almost no redeeming qualities in my opinion. Manning just wants to do what he thinks is right, even if it’s not what he wants deep in his own heart. And Lake’s father is an overprotective, overbearing, controlling jerk for the most part. What does the future hold for them all when only Tiffany and her father are getting what they want?Go get book 3 right now!!!

The feels.
So this is the second book in the series. I LOVED the first book & couldn’t wait to see what happened next. To say I was surprised is an understatement! Oh Manning what have you done!! Lake is still as adorable & sweet as ever. And this book made me love her even more because I really felt her pain & heartbreak. Manning I’ve got to admit it my love for him dimmed slightly in this book because I honesty didn’t get his decisions. I kinda of understand why but I think he did it all wrong! And Tiffany yep I still hate her & even more so I’m this book.

Well that just sucks, are you kidding me with that ending.Sublime storytelling and a masterclass in writing. The emotional turmoil and rollercoaster of the characters especially lake is heartbreaking.Definitely a page turner with a story so simple it just feels so true. I loved everything about this story. It's just beautiful.Definitely worth a look, highly recommend.

AH-MAZING!!!
Loved this book even more!!So glad I could start the next book and not have to wait. This book had even more angst in than the first book and I loved it.I still heart Lake & Manning.A certain person still annoyed me so much that I was getting so stabby towards her. I was like gahhh just go away will ya for god sake lol.God I felt so so sorry for Lake. My heart just seriously broke for her. All she wants is the person who she loves but theres all these obstacles in her way. Then that ending..... I cried so hard. Poor Lake. I felt even more heartbroken for her.Tut tut tut Manning. You was in the bad books with me pal!!! lol xx

Slow burn
Wow so this book was a really slow tease, and in some ways I wished I could speed up the outcome but then it happens and I wished it didn’t. Poor old Manning is stuck but will he ever be able to unleash his true feelings? Lake has carried her guilt like a coat for her actions that took Manning away but what will happen next?Great story, plot, characters, angst, some sexual content but nothing too crude. I’m seething over how this read ended but I’m moving straight on to the next in the series.
