Gems covered with dirt
To begin with, these are CR-V, (Chrome Vanadium Allow Steel)! This is a very strong, tough, and hard metal. The catch on why they are cheap, think Ikea. It is nothing more that the metal rough cut to shape. YOU will be responsible for resurfacing the face, honing, sharpening, and stropping the edge. YOU will need various sharpening blocks, whetstone, diamond plate, ceramic, your choice. If you are going to be using chisels quite often, you already figured out that there is not way around this, you MUST buy a sharpening media of some kind. So why not buy these chisels for such a damn low price and practice what will need to be done regardless? The metal is NOT pitted, it only has deep gouges from the rough cut. If you are not going to resurface the face, and it is not necessary, it takes not time at all to sharpen an edge. However, if you have so much as an inkling of OCD, like me, and you COMMIT to resurface the face with hand stones, you WILL be spending HOURS on the face, it is a very hard metal alloy. The metal alone for these pieces is 5 stars. Consider that ONE 1/8th CR-V chisel runs around 15 dollars........Do the math.

Wih some hard work, these may do the trick
****UPDATED****ORIGINAL REVIEW 15 MAY 2021:As you can see from the photos I've attached, these chisels arrived very pitted and with the cutting edges extremely rough and uneven. I ran one of the blades over a cloth and you can see all of the lint it collected, above. Most of the undersides are concave and will need quite a bit of honing before I can work with them. But I'd have to set up and hone even premium blades so that's not a huge strike, eapecially since they're not convex in the centers. The pitting doesn't appear deep so it may not affect the overall quality of these chisels, in the longrun. It could be due to a quality assurance flaw when the metal casts were machined and the slag wasn't filed from them properly. Only time will tell. The chisels did arrive with a fine sheen of oil and I've found no oxidation damage. There were a lot of fine metal particles stuck in the oil, but that is also a quality assurance issue and won't affect their usability.None of the blades were sharp and most actually had a thick burr, which was easily removed, in no time. The sharpening stone is practically useless for honing the underside of the blade and I spent over an hour and have still not managed to even it out, even on a single chisel! I've just ordered diamond plates, which should fix that issue, in short order, however.Combined with one of my own wetstones, I did sharpen the cutting edge and it is extremely sharp. Sharp enough that when my cat jumped in my lap and I slipped, while sharpening, it left a pretty nasty cut in my finger and I felt no more than a sharp sting. The honing guide is fairly level and gets the job done without any issues, thus far.Because I've not been able to hone the underside of a chisel, yet, I've not had the opportunity to put these to use (Except when my cat tried to assist me with a minor amputation) so I'm unable to give a full and fair review. That's why I gave the 3 stars. I will update within about a week's time and will adjust my rating, either way, if needed.I have to say, however, for the asking price, these will probably turn out to be little gems. I purchased these for carving mortise and tenon joints as I don't want to risk my current chisels on such rough work. Where else are you going to purchase even passible chissels for such a low price?UPDATE 7 OCTOBER 2021:I apologize that it took me five months to get back here, to finish my review, but it's been hecticOkay... These little babies aren't half bad. They clean up real fancy. They become very sharp, with very little effort, on a diamond stone and a leather strop (400, 1000, strop). Only takes about 10 passes on each, before they're deadly sharp. That's only after the couple hours it took me to grind all of them down on the diamond plate. My only issue, after using for more than four months is this: they go full SO FAST. No big deal, though. I spend 2 minutes, literally, sharpening one, when it starts to catch on the wood and I'm right back in business. When honed well, they help me produce beautiful, long curls.Mine have taken hammering (with a steal hammer), being forcully gouged into nonwood items and dropped more times than I can count and I've been very pleasantly surprised. The handles have held up without any slack or twisting and barely a mark on the metal pounding knob. The blades have suffered no damage and I'm still abusing the badboys, just about every dayThey give me nice, clean wood, which I rarely have to sand with anything more than 220 grit paper. For the very low cost I paid for these, I've probably already gotten my monies worth our of them. I highly recommend these, for beginning woodworks or anyone that doesn't want to invest in an pricey, quality set. Nope, they are not perfect, but for what I paid, they're great! I'm bumping my rating from 3 to 5 stars.

Good bang for your buck, with a little honing
First off, if you’re spending $30 on a set of (8) chisels you’re not looking for professional grade tools or anything close. The fact is these are metal tools that can be resharpened/honed into something useful. This is a good rough set so you don’t have to feel bad if you chip one or even loose one. Straight from the factory, most of the chisels are not 90* at their tips/cutting edge and contain burrs.Again, for $30 this is to be expected and still makes these a deal. This set comes with a honing guide and a dual sided sharpening stone which I’ll use on most of them straight away. If you’re ok with putting in a BT little time, which you should get used to anyway to keep your tools maintained, then these are a decent set overall. The handles seem decent too; look and feel like a DeWalt knock off.Would recommend.
