Q: Are recordings stored in the cloud without an annual subscription for later retrieval should something happen and you want to subscribe later?

No. After the trial it's pay up or you have a basically a peephole. They should at least have 24 hour or even 12 hour free... for everyone that buys it. My Terrible experience with them is that I had the free trial and something went wrong their end and it was all deleted. We had some caught in the act of stealing things and no proof. They've done nothing about it. I've spoken/email to about 30 people all of which do nothing. 1 person finally came back saying its gone forever and they can't do anything. They even promised a free subscription which never materialised. It's in a holiday home and i have no access to it easily otherwise it would go back. The main problem with these IP cameras is a robber only needs to cut the incoming telephone or cable feed and it's completely dead and useless. Nothing is even stored on Camera. should have a store onboard if the internet goes out - then that too is uploaded when / if it comes back on. So overall I think it's a terrible product and the worst customer service I have every had. No one knows anything about them and can't pass you onto anyone that can help. It really is a shame as the Actual hardware is great and works really well - but software is very lacking and the service is inexcusable consider the upfront and ongoing cost.

Q: If you opt for no subscription can you get clips/photos emailed or anything like that, or is it just live streaming only? What about motion alerts?

I have not subscribed, but I still receive notifications of alerts via the app on the phone. I then log in and you have a history log that you can view for that day. I use it to monitor my father through the night who has a form of dementia and have set up "activity zones" that send me an alert as soon as there is motion in that zone. Takes about 30 seconds to come through. Really excellent product.

Q: I have a nas can i use these cameras to record to it instead of using their cloud service?

If you're using security/surveillance software on the NAS, you'd need to check the compatibility on NAS vendor site. If it happens to be Synology, the Nest Cam isn't compatible with Surveillance Station. I think because of the subscription model Nest has, they are, unfortunately, unlikely to make it easy to save recordings anywhere other than their own cloud service

Q: Can I install more than one camera?

With the newer Nest Aware subscription (if you are happy to do that) you now get more than one camera included in the same subscription
