Cheap Consult Cable that works
I purchased this item to help with some troubleshooting of my 1991 Nissan 240SX.The Good:First off, it works. Using it connected via a USB to serial adapter as well. For software I am using ECUtalk for data logging, and it works great. Also tryed with the free version of Conzult, it also works. Haven't tried Nissan Data Scan yet. Does NOT work with TECU for some reason, but I think that may be a COM port issue with the USB/Serial Adapter I am using. Its cheap and build quality seems ok. Comes with the free version of conzult on a mini cd. No other instructions or anything are included - but it's pretty straight forward. Plug in your USB to serial adapter, install drivers, verify its working, hook up to the consult and plug it into the consult connector on your car. Open software of your choice, set the com port to which ever com port the adapter is installed as, and you should be good to go.Bad - the LED doesn't turn on to let you know the unit is working. - This may just be my unit, or it may be all units, I don't know. It seems odd to put an LED on it if it never is going to turn on. That being said, it doesn't effect the fuction of the unit, so I don't really care. This and the lack of instuctions are the reasons I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 though.Other notes: If using a USB to Serial adapter (like I assume most people are) make sure the adapter is installed and properly working before trying to connect to the device. If it matters, the USB-serial adapter I am using is based on the prolific chipset. I don't recall where I got it though.

Works as advertised
Connects to my 1991 GA16DE, reads trouble codes and real time values as expected.Build quality seems fine considering the price. Another reviewer mentioned the LED on theirs didn't do anything. On mine, it seems to do a steady green blink if the ECU is powered. It does not appear to reflect activity on the interface, or whether the serial port is connected. There is no documentation included. The included disk contains the freeware version of conzult. You can get the same thing off the web. This can read codes and monitor some parameters, but the full version is required to access most of the advanced features.Using windows vista 32 bit and a Prolific PL2303HX based USB to serial adapter, conzult works, although I have found I get a "Unable to open com port (win error code 2)" error unless I manually select the correct com port each time I start, even though the correct com port appears to be selected by default. I also tried ecutalk 1.3.5, which works without any issues.Overall, this seems like a great deal for the price if you have a pre-OBD2 Nissan with the 14 pin consult port.

Works for my 1995 Mercury Villager with CONSULT interface
Works just fine with my 1995 Villager (i.e. pre-OBD II).Here's a few comments on its use:Most computers don't have a serial port anymore, so you'll have to buy a USB to Serial adapter. I bought the one they recommended from work (industrial equipment still has a lot of RS232 interfaces). The adapter was the Tripp Lite USB to Serial DB9M Adapter (U209-000-R). It came up and worked with no messing around to get com ports straight, etc.I didn't use the software on the disk that comes with it. Like others, I went out and found ECUTalk on the web and pulled it down. It does a really good job. It allows you to monitor a collection of ECU signals and will get and reset codes that are tripping the check engine light. This thing was probably worth the price just in the fact that I didn't have to try and do the manual procedure for resetting codes, which is really a headache, if you can find the instructions.Probably the only difficult thing about this is determining that you do indeed have a 14 Pin Nissan CONSULT interface.

There is freeware (ECU Talk) that is a pretty good deal - have not played with it that ...
It does what it is supposed to do - the software is a bit liteweight but I was so pissed off when they sent it in a plastic bag with no padding and the cd was cloudy and scratched up and wouldn't load. They referred me to a download on the sellers site. So I guess i gt what I paid for. There is freeware (ECU Talk) that is a pretty good deal - have not played with it that much. I think my expectations were a bit high and my knowledge of these applications is a bit low. U need the Trendnet Rs 232 to USB 2.o cable to hook it to your laptop - another $10.

Excellent!
I needed this for my '97 Sentra which was experiencing a stuttering problem. It has one of those proprietary "Consult" ports, not the regularly shaped OBD I ports. So I hooked bought and hooked this unit up to an old PC with a serial port and ran the ECUtalk software. It spat out a code for the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAFS). This was confirmed on the gauges tab which shows the engine parameters in real time. Everything else was receiving a signal except the MAFS. I replaced it and now the car runs like a champ. I'm pretty sure saved a few hundred dollars at the mechanic as well. You can't make changes i.e. program the car's ECU with this unit, it's just a scanner. But if you're just looking to do diagnostics on your older NISSAN with a Consult port, it's well worth the money IMO.

Worked great
This thing is great. had to get some cheap chinese adapter however to convert the serial to USB. Also you can use the free consult software and there's also other free software around the internet that works with these. Either way, worked for me, got my codes for my j30 1993 which i was able to fix. In my case I also extended my usb wire with some cat3 phone wire which now allows me to use the unit up to 20 feet away from the car so I could run the wire to my desktop computer through the window with the car sitting on the driveway. Don't extend any further however or the USB connection will not work, for lack of juice and communication delay issues I guess. Good luck.
