Works To Keep My Kinky Hair Straight
While no product is perfect, this is definitely the best I've found so far. I've been using this for about a week, and that's enough time if you have hair as unruly as mine. I have relatively long hair, and probably use more than most people would, but nothing has ever worked as well to keep my hair straight as this does. I guess that's the caveat: there is no consensus on what really works to keep super kinky hair straight, so this may be unique to my situation. I can attest to the fact that the sheen-or lack thereof-is really natural looking, and doesn't look nearly as greasy as most drugstore products. The scent is mild, but pleasing (I doubt it would be noticeable for anyone more than a few inches away). I think it must be remembered that most pomades should be applied while your hair is damp. That seems to be misunderstood and cause for a lot of complaints. In my case, I wet my hair, dab in a healthy sized amount (maybe a quarter size), comb back (like a slicked back look), let dry, then comb straight. It holds that way pretty much all day. Looks natural and doesn't have the usual look of gel, grease, or most cheaper pomades. If it works for me, I'm sure it would for most. Also, it seems a bit expensive, but 100ml works out to about a third more per tin than something like Axe, so that mitigates the cost somewhat. Really not a bad value at all.

Good hold without being too much
I normally don't use hair products, as I was in the military for 20 years and wearing a hat all the time defeated the purpose of hair products. Now that I'm out, I want to try different hairstyles. To be honest, I wanted to try Dapper Dan because of the movie O, Brother, Where Art Thou? Great marketing tool. However, I also wanted to try it because it's made in England and, quite frankly, European and Japanese products tend to be of higher quality than other items.I am not disappointed. Pomades are known to cause acne in some people, but I haven't had a problem so far. I suspect this is because this product is a paste and not a true pomade. A little goes a long way, but you can always add more if you want more hold or to ensure all your hair is covered, but it's really not necessary. The paste stays in all day but washes out with just water without leaving residue. The matte finish is good for those who don't like a high-shine. It is also flexible in that you can touch your hair and not expect the paste to "break" like gels or similar products. At my current rate of use, I expect a single tin to last several months, so you do get good value for your money.

The pleasing odor is ... nope, it isn’t.
The pleasing odor is half the point!Unfortunately, mine doesn’t actually smell much at all. So that is a bummer but not a deal breaker. What’s important is how well it holds up my hair, and it does a dandy job, albeit not for very long. I’d compare the strength and longevity in hair with that of American Crew Fiber.Remember to rub the product in your hands until it warms up a bit, THEN distribute evenly in your hair and style. Otherwise this gets chunky and goopy.Love the tin.I’d love to insert a O Brother Where Art Thou reference here, but many clever folks already did that so, damn I’m in a tight spot.

Five stars for Dapper Dan Matt Paste Pomade High Hold Low Shine!
After about twenty years of short hair I decided to go long again. So I looked around to find something to tame my otherwise unruly hair. Beauticians and barbers all recommended one of the American modern brands but it had too strong of both shine and smell. So I went with Dapper Dan, a well tried formulation from the UK. Since I'd not used pomade in decades I got both the matt (i.e. low shine) versions, clay in the red can and paste in the dark gold can. Between the two for that stage between short hair and long enough to tie back I like the paste better, though the clay is pretty good too. The clay becomes the better choice once hair is long enough to tie.The clay version is harder to get out of the can, so you end up wetting your fingers and making several small additions. The paste is easier to get out of the can and easier to get too much. Too much of the paste is kind of waxy and has to be combed out with more water to spread out. The clay also thickens the look of the hair and too much is, well, too much, too. Both will hold a long time, and will help the hair come back together during the day if it is combed with a little water.Five stars for the paste!

I love the product, but please ship it in rigid containers.
This product works well for my hair type and style. Great hold without looking greasy. The scent is on the strong side, but it's pleasant and not overpowering once applied. My major complaint is that I can't seem to get a can of Matt Paste that isn't severely damaged. They're shipped in thinly padded, or unpadded paper envelopes. The last one I received was nearly unopenable, but recycling my previous lid saved it. This one is crimped closed and partially smashed. I have sent a message to the store, so hopefully I'll get a response. Great product, terrible shipping practices.
