Simple and to the point.
I guess this is a highly simplified explanation of how the internet works, but so wouldn’t know since this is the only book I’ve read about it so far! What I can say is that the book is very brief in its descriptions of the internets underlying technology, however, it’s also thorough enough to give you a good conceptual grasp on the topics in each chapter. This book is very short. The pages and text are quite large and you could definitely read this in one sitting over 2 or 3 hours if you really wanted to. Personally, I prefer reading in chunks, and I would suggest reading through 10 pages a day so you don’t overwhelm yourself with so much info and so you get a chance to digest what you’re reading.Overall, this book is good. Easy to read, with some grammar and punctuation errors, but I can ignore those. Physical quality of the paperback is low (glassy cover and nonstandard page sizes) but useable. Also, it was written by THE Dr Charles Severance. I say give it a read if you want to understand the basics of how the internet works.

Bare-bone required basics
Excellent book to cover the basics required to understand networking. Nevertheless, without a solid understanding of the basics it's hard to grasp future concepts, hence the reason this book is great. This is a very bare bones book and can apply to everyone and this is a great starting point. Got to walk before you can run. The next steps are understanding the more detailed aspects of networks which can dive into bits & bytes and math algorithms which the average person may not care about. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be aware that it covers the TCP model in depth, the OSI model is the new model used for internet networking. Hence the book gives you a glimpse into the original network design and it's a good way to understand how it all started, but things have indeed evolved since then. Hence the reason for 4 stars.

A great, simple to understand overview of how internet networking works
This was a very easy read and helped give me the basic understanding of networks I was looking for. If you're looking for a good high level, intro to networking and the internet, this is a great place to start. I read it in a day and I'm a slow reader

Should be a classic.
Some have complained that this text does not include many of the finer details of networking. To those, I would argue that's not the point of this book.I have the paperback. I have read portions of this in pdf format. Both are great. The illustrations are simple, but effective. If you have next to no knowledge of networking, having this book under your belt (should not take you longer than a week or so to read through, at a leisurely pace), reading through this will ensure your acquaintance with the various concept which you will later delve into further with other networking textbooks, which can often be dry and dull. The author does a marvelous job of keeping the various concepts fresh in your head so you can tie them all together. To get lost in the details so early in the game could be counterproductive to your integration of these concepts.

Excellent Primer Material
This was a very well-written book that explained the fundamentals of networking in an approachable, friendly manner. Charles managed to break down the material into easily digestible chapters with re-caps at the end of each one to help you gauge your information retention. Some of the chapter quiz questions are a bit specific to the examples given in the book rather than the underlying principles, but I found the vast majority of them to be helpful in assessing my progress. This book and supporting materials have been made available online for free by the benevolent author at oercommons.orgA big thanks to Chuck! I am eager to reccomend this book to anyone looking to get into tech.

Good general overview, but very simplistic
This book contains very simple explanations of how networking operates. It does not contain any details, such as examples of usage. It is more like a long introductory chapter in a larger book on the subject. I will very likely have to purchase a more technical book with more detail and examples of coding. Also, the Kindle version of this book is missing all of the images! I can't seem to find a way to report it, though.

Great book from Charles Severance that gives a nice introduction to networking.
Easy to read and understand. Gives a good introduction to networking. Also some nice model images of network infrastructure in the book that makes it easier to understand.

Solid and Understandable
I read this book over the course of a week, with the hope of better understanding the basics of networking, and I've come away from it satisfied, and ready to ask more complicated questions. The explanations were clear, and supplemented with relevant examples to help understanding.I would recommend this to anyone interested in networking, whether you're just starting out or your a student trying to get a refresher of the basics. I myself found that it helped tremendously to break down a few of the concepts I'll have to cover when taking the certification exam for the CompTIA Network+.
