Synology DiskStation DS220j Network Attached Storage Drive (White)

Doing a review after 2 weeks of use.Using 2 X 10 TB + 1TB external USB HDD on it. Which is running very fast for basic requirements for home purposes.I am a 3D Developer & have kept almost 4TB of data (Design tools, models, websites, 700+ movies & 70,000+ photos on Synology Photos)If you are confused about it's performance, let me tell you the truth.On the hardware side as you can see in specs. That it runs on very low grade hardware.First week:In my first week when I was copying all my data into NAS it was running very slow. Then I realised that while copy it was also checking each file / photo (trying to identify people) / checking movie info etc.It took very long to copy. Then I turned off most of it's apps that are checking files.Then I saw it's actual speed & performance and that was amazing.If you are not using files indexing for Synology drive then it will run very smooth without any visible lag. If the Indexing is on then forget about using the device. It's a crap if the file indexing is running & meanwhile you want to access the file/photos/movies.Second week:Now I have have been using multiple features of it & it's performing amazingly with good speed along with security. Mentioning some of the key features that I am using:1. Website builds hosting (with https sso service)2. Drive & files access on LAN & on VPN too.3. Hosted Node.js website & Apache server on it.(it has 512 MB RAM , so be careful, you can't run heavy compilation in nodejs/python on it & DS220J is not upgradable)4. All my movies are online now & can watch them any where. (Good buffering speed over internet like YouTube. 4K blue ray content also running smooth)5. Don't worry about the HDD life too. That can also be set to Hibernation mode after an idle timeout.6. Free Domain name by Synology.7. Python & node Backend server.8. RAID setup for scheduled backup.If you are a Developer who just want his small websites to get hosted / Video content creator / photographer who want to keep all his files safe & online just go ahead for it.If you want some heavy processing like big compilation/ faster images identification & 5+ continues depandant users to work/use services. Please go for higher models. It can handle smaller stuff for home & basic purposes that I wrote above.Experience was good with what I bought. Go for it.Thanks

Working perfect and best for simple usage

Bought this entry level product as my first home use NAS. I paired it with two 2TB Ironwolf drives. Have used it mostly for storing my personal pictures, media and work files. Have used it for about a couple of months without any issues. Be aware that using and configuring a NAS does take some learning and effort, but Synology provides a good deal of online resources to help. There are also quite a few videos on YouTube. If you simply need a place to store your files, you may be better off with an external HDD. A NAS may not justify the expense. However, if you need to access and stream files to devices other than a laptop and also the ability to access it over the Internet from anywhere in the world a NAS may be a good option. I was able to entirely configure and use all its features through my iPad and android phone.

We have currently installed one 3.5 inch 4TB drive, this has 2 Bays.It takes a while to boot to the OS, I feel it is a bit slow.You can use it as long as doesn't need to transcode.They usually last more than 4 years easily, even quite old models are still getting updates.We use it for downloading purposes, it is a better option than leaving your pc on 247.We have installed plex, so we are able to watch movies on TVs and listen to music on the soundbar.There are apps available for mobile devices if you need to take the backup of your phone.DiskStation DS220j is connected through Netgear RBK50 mesh router and we haven't faced any bandwidth issues.Overall a good product. Might upgrade to higher-end Synology NAS for transcoding 4k, maybe in another 3 0r 4 years.

This model doesn't come with disks. It makes it flexible for customer to use install right capacity disks as per his requirements. I could install SATA drives from my old computer and get it going.- Product packaging is very good. No cheap cost cuttings.- Package comes with enough number of screws (with differnt lengths) fit your own HDDs- Doesn't include extender for 2.5 inch disks (if someone needs).- Overall hardware looks to be good quality- User interface is pretty intutive and easy to setup quickly.- I had some problems settings up network access on my windows laptop. There wasn't good enough troubleshooting information available.
