NOT FOR KIDS NOT FOR KIDS NOT FOR KIDS!
Do *not* listen to other reviews! This series is not for children! It's graphic in a number of ways and has mature themes and topics all throughout! That said, the story is amazing! I was introduced to Made in Abyss through the "recap" movies, as the community tends to call them. They are a condensed version of the manga and anime while still being absolutely *breathtaking* in visuals, story telling, and soundtrack to start! That said, there were some questionable scenes that make one rolls their eyes at the creator.. and if anyone knows anything about the manga counterparts to their animes, you'd know that they are *significantly* more detailed and can be as previously stated, graphic. Those questionable scenes in the anime are even more questionable in the manga and make me genuinely wonder how it even got published??? But none of these scenes have anything relevant to the story so they're easy to just skip over, usually only being on a 2 page spread. (Insert eye roll here)Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy being able to explore the Abyss in a 3rd way, as people who have read the manga, as well as watched the movies and anime, know that there is information/scenes exclusive to each one! So I still recommend exploring the manga in your own time if you're a fan of the series as a whole. If you haven't gotten into it, like I said, there's a few questionable things regarding the creators art choices but everything else is so beyond worth the hatred I have for him in every other way! :D

Beautiful Manga, Beautiful Series
If you’re already a fan of Made in Abyss and haven’t read the manga (or maybe even if you’ve already read it but don’t own it)— get this! It’s absolutely beautiful and so worth it to add to/ start your collection. After watching the whole series and follow-up movie straight through literally ~10x, I was admittedly sad and desperate for more. Then quickly realized, “Wait, the manga!” and was fortunate enough to be able to splurge on volumes 1-9 at once. (Btw, the official anthology is cute and also worth getting, if you’re really into the series!)The books are beautiful, nicely sized (bigger than standard manga size, or at least how they were sized when I used to collect them ~a decade ago), have extra (canon, of course!) tidbits of info + lil side explanations, etc, and contain more details about the story overall! Not to mention the beautiful full-colored illustrations. I’ve been lovingly staring at them ok my bookshelf from across the room since I got them, as I’m in no rush to catch up to where the manga currently is... :’)Alternatively, if you’re not familiar with the series and somehow stumbled upon the manga and are reading this review... GET IT. Get it all, watch it all, take it all in, and do it again and again. Such an amazing wholesome yet heavy and dark series, full of terrifying yet magical, ethereal creatures and situations. I cannot do it justice!

A dark twist that waits for the innocent
This series has become my ultimate go-to manga and anime. The art style is beautiful and is very detailed where it needs to be. The only thing that could make the artwork any better is if the whole book was full-color. But, that's not commonplace in manga it seems.[LIGHT SPOILERS]The story-line is well driven, with the idea of a town built around an abyss being a great starting point for what's coming ahead. But, there's a reason why the abyss is often referred to as "the netherworld," and it affects anyone who dares to challenge the call of the abyss. As the series develops, you'll follow the protagonist's journey into the abyss and recognize the challenges and trials that lies ahead. The motive for the journey seems humble, but gets questioned if it's worth the risk further down the line. Needless to say, plenty of action is available in the book with a decent amount of drama and coated with suspense. [/SPOILERS]As much as I love the book, it's definitely an adult manga, and I do have to question why they label the back of the book as "late teen". There are scenes in the book that might not be considered "socially acceptable" for lack of better words. I hesitate to say it's not lewd and it's purpose in the book is appointed because of "plot," but it's presence is notable and may turn people off of the series. If this is of a concern, I recommend watching the Anime adaptation of the series as it's more censored in this regard. But, as the series continues, occurrences of this kind are much less common (at least up to book 6 so far)

Love this manga!
I found out about the manga after seeing the first animated season of Made in Abyss. I fell in love with the show, so was very excited at finding the manga. The artwork is lovely. Lots of details in the grayscale illustrations. An interesting story line that is very unique in many ways. Well thought out, imaginative characters as well as creatures that are diverse and range in characteristics suited to the areas they inhabit. Like most manga it’s not all happiness and happily ever after. It’s one of the reasons I love manga. You get a full range of circumstances and the emotions that go with it; embarrassing situations, tragic events, comfort, joy, friendship, loss, and adventure.

Charming, wholesome, beautiful but also dark
The art is beautiful and the characters are very likeable and endering. Ofcours not every series will apeal to everyone but as someone who is a bit further in to the series I would say one can tell after the first volume if this is youre cup of tea ore not.I feel like the cover already conveys really well what you get in to. This series is known fore being pretty dark but there is alot of Joy and wholsomeness to it which the cover conveys perfectly. So if the cover of the first volume does not apeal to you the chance is pretty high that this is not the right thing fore you.If it does apeal to you you should ask yourself if you can stomach that this cute and wholsome story has dark elements and twists to it. And those do not pull there punches. I dont want to diwnplay the dark elements of this story but I feel like most people hype them up to much and overlook the wholesome joyfull side of it.

A captivating story, but not for the young or faint of heart.
The North American January 2018 release of the first volume of Akihito Tsukushi's 2013 manga Made In Abyss provides a slightly different view from its anime counterpart (which was voted Best Anime in the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2017). The anime released in July 2017 on Anime Strike, but as of January 5th 2018 has been moved to Amazon Prime Video, so if you have Amazon Prime you can watch it there for free. The art style is cute, but there's a reason why Made In Abyss is rated "OLDER TEEN", which might not be clear until later volumes. This series is a rollercoaster of emotions,Akihito Tsukushi's world-building is some of the best I've seen. Set in a world where every place on the planet has been thoroughly explored, the only mystery remaining is the great "Abyss" (a giant vertical chasm set in the middle of a remote island). The Abyss is home to great treasures from ages passed, and great dangers that make it almost impossible to completely explore. You'll find a lot of extra tidbits in the manga that were skimmed over or completely skipped in the anime, as well as some events that transpire a little differently. The first volume ends just as the adventure is getting started, so its mostly exposition. Don't let that deter you though. Even the introduction is filled with such interesting design, delightful characters, humor, great art and great pacing. With the first volume released in January, and the second slated for April, I'd suggest watching the anime's first season first, and then get the volumes to read as they're released to get a deeper look into the world. If you don't like the anime, you're probably not going to like the manga, since they're fairly close in art style and story (at least up to this first volume).Be warned though, the anime gets pretty gruesome towards the end of the first season.
