Testing Three Headlamps (Yalumi, Energizer, & Dewalt)

I had an older (a couple versions ago) Energizer headlamp and decided to get some more since headlamps are just so much more handy than flashlights.I bought the  yalumi LED Headlamp Spark 105-Lumen 90-Meter Spotlight, Advanced Optics, 1.5X Brightness, Longer Battery Life, Less than 2.7oz , a new Energizer version, the  Energizer Pro 7 LED Industrial Headlamp , and a  DEWALT DWHT70440 Jobsite Touch Headlamp . All three are decent, each with its strengths. The Yalumi has the tightest, most focused beam of the three. The low-beam is quite strong, while the high-beam can be blinding when you catch the reflection (i.e. turning a corner). It seems to me that the emergency beacon mode (flashing/strobe) would be the most visible of the three. I was really surprised at the quality based on the price -- a lot more light than I expected. For longer distances, it's hands-down the winner of these three. The Dewalt was a tad more expensive and a little heavier. It's a solidly made light with good beams and can be used on helmets better than the others due to the extra gripping material it has on the inside of the strap. While it feels slightly heavier when worn independently and the front light sits a little differently than the others, it's actually very comfortable and firm. Instead of a switch to change from low to high, it uses a "dial" that changes the focus of the beam. It also angles upward if that's a consideration (the others can be flipped upside-down for that purpose). The Energizer has an added feature the others lack in the red beamed "night light". If you are in situations that require good night vision and you don't want to have to wait 15 minutes for your eyes to re-adjust, the feature is a real plus. As with the Yalumi, it has an emergency beacon (flash/strobe) mode. Otherwise, the flood is a decent, wide-angle (150 degree?) soft light and the spot is acceptable, though not powerful.Swapping between the three for about a month of nightly use, I haven't seen any battery drainage and only time will tell how they stand up to use and abuse. For flooding an area close to you (e.g. indoors), the Energizer and Dewalt are the better options. If you don't need a flood for a short-range, broad beam or the red beam to preserve night vision, the Yalumi is the way to go. All three are solid buys for the prices.UPDATE (12/30/14): The Yalumi quickly became my go-to light and is definitely the best of the three, despite being the least expensive. Battery life is very good -- maybe not what's claimed -- but still better than the others. The Dewalt went in the toolbox. The Energizer went on the shelf -- except for the occasions I want a red beam to preserve night vision.RANK:1) Yalumi2) Dewalt3) Energizer

Yalumi 105 Lumen works fine with NiMH rechargeables.

I've been using the Yalumi 105 lumen headlamp for a couple of months now. I should have gotten one of these sooner. I've been running at night for years and never got around to buying a headlamp. Big mistake. This doesn't just light your way. It also makes you way more visible to cars. It's a different experience. They actually know you're there.I'm really writing the review to point out that this headlamp runs fine with NiMH rechargeable batteries. I think the directions said that it only worked with alkalines and maybe lithium batteries. Sometimes things don't work with NiMHs because their voltage is lower than alkalines. But the Yalumi 105 has run fine with both sets of AAA NiMHs that I've tried. One set is standard NiMH. The other set is the low self discharge (also known as precharged) NiMH variety. If you don't already have some then I'd get the low self discharge ones because they hold their charge between uses way better than the standard NiMHs. Search for "eneloop aaa" on Amazon to find the low self discharge ones. I think fresh alkalines are a little brighter than NiMHs but the rechargeables are bright enough that I run them at the lesser of the two beam strengths. For comfort reasons I run with the headlamp while wearing a baseball cap. The cap goes on first and then the light goes around the top of the cap. You can't see it very well in the product pictures but the down angle of the light is adjustable. The main part actually has two pieces and you can aim the light downward by opening it up. I have it on top of my baseball cap with the down angle set to maximum. The bill of the cap cuts off some of the larger dimmer part of the beam just in front of you but the smaller bright part of the beam isn't blocked by the hat. The bright part of the beam hits the road eight or ten feet in front of you where it belongs. The summary is that I find it works fine with a baseball cap. You mileage may vary. For me it's comfortable and lights my way just fine.

Love this Yalumi headlamp because it is simplest of all brands to operate

Before I switched to this brand of Yalumi 105 lumens headlamp I had used many different other brands of headlamps, I since have only this model everywhere. Thats because this is the simplest to operate of all brands of headlamps. Other brands have too many/multiple buttons to push to try to make you think their headlamps are superior, but they are not. When you're fumbling around & sweating, you don't want to have to remember which of multiple buttons to blindly fumble with until you eventually get which light amount you want. Vs this Yalumi needs no memorizing because it has just one giant button on top, you can't miss it, very simple each time you push this giant button the light gets brighter.

I like that the item is pretty light weight

The product works as described. I think you get more than what you pay for.I use the headlamp to hike and walk around in the dark outside.I like that the item is pretty light weight.I like that It uses normal, common batteries. The thing is super durable. I left the thing in my pocket and washed it in the machine. It still works! But the one and off button is kinda wonky from the beating it took in the washer. That being said, I called the company and asked them if they can fix the button. I never mentioned how it was damaged or anything. I just told them that the button was wonky and if they could fix it for me. I don't want to create more waste on the environment. They didn't ask how it got damaged or blamed me for it being broke. They sent me a new one and when I asked if they had a new product, and asked them if I can pay extra to get a better light, the customer service guy gave me the upgrade for free. The more expensive model that I got works as described. It has more functions and if you want and need that, I would not hesitate to get it. I think it is comparable to the black diamond head lamp that I have but is a better price point. So the 5 stars is for the durability of the product and more importantly, the customer service. I think they took care of it above and beyond.
